Sutton Wilderness Area
Cleveland County

Back   Return to Index

From the 1986 edition of A Guide to Birding in Oklahoma published by the Tulsa Audubon Society, updated in 2007.

This is a walking trip that will take about one hour, depending upon the birding. To reach the area take Robinson St. east from I 35 to East 12 Ave. Go north three-fourths mile to the wilderness area signs and the parking lot, just south of the intersection of NE 12th and Rock Creek. This urban wilderness is managed by Norman Parks and Recreation

There are small artificial lakes with a bordering variety of evergreen and deciduous trees. The surrounding fields have been planted to native grasses and forbs. Spring is the best time to visit the area. Migrating warblers, late wintering sparrows, and newly arriving nesting birds are to be expected. Painted Buntings are numerous. Plans are underway to establish a Bluebird Trail in the park.
