Apache Sewage Ponds

Sewage ponds and the areas surrounding them are attractive to a great variety of birds. These are two small retention pond with marshy areas. It is good for ducks and shorebirds, and other birds seen here include Least Tern, Common Moorhen, Least Bittern, American Bittern, Sora, Virginia Rail, Yellow-crowned Night Heron. The ponds are on the West side of 145th E. Ave, just South of Apache. From I-244 Go North on 161st E. Ave to Pine. Go West about a mile until you get to 145th E. Ave. Turn North and go about a mile. You will see them on the left side of the road. It is fenced and there is no public access. However, there is a wide road shoulder to pull over. You can see much of the area standing by the fences or standing in the back of a pickup offers a better view. There is a lot of truck traffic, be sure to pull well off the road. After birding the ponds, be sure to drive along North 141st East Avenue between 36th St. North and Apache St. This 1 mile stretch of road is a good place to bird all year. In the Spring and Summer Bell's vireos are abundant. Blue Grosbeaks, Orchard Orioles, Painted and Indigo Buntings are also easily found. In the winter Sparrows are abundant. GPS coordinates of Apache and 145th are N 36 degrees 11.455', W 095 degrees 48.921', 695 feet elevation.
